The Golden State Warriors keep on stacking wins and have truly found a groove over the past handful of games. The eight-game homestand they're in the midst of surely helps as well, limiting travel and keeping players rested without any back-to-backs.
This trend continued on Saturday night as the Warriors rolled over the Charlotte Hornets, picking up a dominant 136-116 win. It wasn't without hiccups, though. Just minutes before tipoff, after starting lineups were announced, it was revealed that Will Richard would be slotting into the starting lineup in place of Jimmy Butler, and it was reported that Butler was nowhere to be found on the bench.
Eventually, it was announced that Butler was missing this game due to personal reasons, and the Warriors did an excellent job weathering this sudden storm to come away with a quality victory to move to five games over .500 and just 3 games out of the 4th seed.
Following the victory, Steph Curry was asked about when the team found out Butler would be unable to play and how they adjusted to that information.
"Literally as coach (Kerr) is drawing up the play before the jump ball (is when we found out). The big part is you don't really have time to react at that point. Will (Richard) steps in, get our matchups, and just try to play sound basketball offensively so that we can establish ourselves in the first quarter and give ourselves momentum and make our presence felt so you're not chasing, cause we understand without Jimmy, we are a different team. Thankfully, we were able to do that early."
Curry's assessment of establishing momentum was on the money. The Warriors indeed got off to a fast start, splashing 9 triples en route to a 39-point first quarter, and it didn't stop there.
69 points at half matched the exact total they had going into the locker rooms the last time the Warriors and Hornets met on New Year's Eve, and after scoring 43 points in the third quarter, their 112 points were the most through three quarters in any game this year.
The final total of 136 tied for second-most in any game this season, as the Warriors shot 55% from the field and 44% from three in the blowout victory.
With Butler out, the reserves were without their usual leader, but it seemed like it didn't matter this time around. The four players that typically play with Butler as the second unit — Richard, De'Anthony Melton, Al Horford, and Brandin Podziemski — were all still excellent, turning in box plus-minuses of +24, +20, +24, and +16, respectively.
Buddy Hield also slotted into the rotation to absorb some of Butler's minutes and dropped 14 points in 18 minutes. He was a part of the bench's 72 points that outscored Charlotte's bench by 23 points.
Melton led the team in scoring with a season-high 24 points, and 8 different players scored in double figures as the ball moved expertly within the offense and found open shooters all throughout the night.
The Warriors now have a back-to-back on deck to close out the homestand with the Miami Heat on Monday and the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.
