What is the future of Steph Curry with the Warriors?

Steph Curry has been the face of the Golden State Warriors franchise since he was drafted seventh overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Wearing #30 for 17 years, Curry has won two MVPs, two scoring titles, and four NBA championships. He's become one of the best players of his generation, and one of the few transcendent players in NBA history with the way he redefined the three-point shot and off-ball movement as a superstar player.

At the age of 38, Steph is closer to the end of his career than he is the beginning, and he has one year left on his contract before he will become an unrestricted free agent in the 2027 offseason.

The Future of Steph Curry

Speaking to Nick Friedell of The Athletic, Steph commented on his future in The Bay.

“I think honestly, you figure it out in real time. Because the same way we got to this point — there’s not a crystal ball that tells you what opportunities are on the horizon, how to maintain competitiveness with everything that goes on during an NBA season, injuries, all that type of stuff," he said.

The Warriors have been no strangers to injuries in recent seasons that have derailed ay hope of a potential championship push.

In the 2025 playoffs, after upsetting the Houston Rockets in the first round, Curry suffered an injury that took him out of the second round as the Warriors fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

This past season, an ACL injury to Jimmy Butler ended his year, and Steph missed extended time as the Warriors slipped to a Play-In spot and couldn't recover.

"But I do know there’s a level of — reasonability — in terms of moves or options or opportunities that can help us stay competitive now but don’t handcuff the next five, seven years of our team. So, everything that’s happened to date has been with that as the mindset," he said.

This Season

The Warriors will be running back a 10th seed, but will be without Butler and Moses Moody to start the season.

The team re-signed Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, De'Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, and Al Horford.

They were linked to LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Jaylen Brown in trade talks, but a deal never got across the finish line, in part due to the Warriors' unwillingness to part with the number of draft picks the other teams were looking for.

Not parting with those picks is a sign that the team has an eye on the future, not wanting to make any major moves unless it means putting themselves back into championship contention.
