At 38 years old, Steph Curry has started the season with a scoring record for players 37 and older, and the Warriors have ridden it to five straight wins.
Not many players are still adding to their resume in their 18th season, but guard Steph Curry keeps finding his way back into the record book, and the Golden State Warriors are winning because of it.
Curry has 180 points through his first six games of the season, which works out to 30.0 points per game.
That is the most points by a player 37 or older through that point of a season, passing the 169 that Karl Malone scored to open the 2000-01 season.
The Numbers Behind the Start
Curry put up 34 points, seven assists and six rebounds in Monday's 116-113 win over the Suns at Chase Center, going 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
That one miss ended a streak of 51 straight made free throws to start the season, which the Warriors' game notes list as the sixth-longest streak to begin a season since play-by-play was first officially recorded in 1997-98.
He is shooting 46.8% from the field, 42.9% from three and 98.1% from the line, and he has made at least one three in 98 straight games.
The Warriors' notes also list Curry with 15 career 40-point games at age 35 or older, tied with LeBron James and ahead of Michael Jordan's 12.
More is coming soon, since Curry sits two points behind Oscar Robertson for 17th on the all-time scoring list, and two more rebounds would make him just the seventh player with 26,000 points, 5,000 rebounds and 6,000 assists, according to Elias.
What It Means for Golden State
The Warriors started the season 0-3 before winning five in a row, and Curry has been the biggest reason for the turnaround.
The supporting cast has chipped in, with rookie forward Yaxel Lendeborg already making an impact, but everything still runs through No. 30.
Forward Georges Niang summed up what it is like to play next to him in an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area's Kerith Burke after Monday's win, and his answer shows how much this locker room trusts its leader.
"I'm spoiled in the basketball world because it is a real treat to go out there and just lean on a guy that's just going to take you home, and he doesn't even have to say it," Niang said.
Curry has talked about how this team is different, and I see it in how the group keeps answering when things go wrong, including after forward Draymond Green was ejected against Phoenix.
The roster still has holes, though, as forward Jimmy Butler is recovering from a torn right ACL and could return between January and February, guard Moses Moody is working back from a ruptured left patellar tendon, and center Kristaps Porzingis remains away from the team, according to ESPN's injury report.
Golden State hosts the Heat on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Chase Center.
As long as Curry keeps playing at this level, the Warriors are a postseason team in my eyes, and if Butler comes back healthy later in the season, they could be a lot more than that.
