Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr encourages Yaxel Lendeborg

The Golden State Warriors picked up their second win of the season on Wednesday, knocking off the Minnesota Timberwolves, 119-114.

Steph Curry stole the show, putting together his first 40-plus point outing of the season, dropping 44 points that included six threes and 16-for-16 from the line.

He was one of three players in double figures for the Warriors.

The only other starter to score in double figures was Yaxel Lendeborg, who continues to be impressive in his rookie season, scoring 26 points to go along with nine rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block.

Steve Kerr Defends Yaxel

Winning cures a lot of issues, and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr wasn’t too hard on the 24-year-old out of Michigan, saying after the game that they would show Yaxel the film and get him to understand the time and the score.

“The general idea is that if you have an advantage, take it. If you don’t, don’t try to force it,” before saying that Yaxel tried to force it too much against the Timberwolves.

Kerr noted that it’s Yaxel’s fifth game in the NBA, but he’s glad it happened in a way because it’s a great lesson for him, showing that the simple play is the best one. Kerr said that Yaxel needs to learn to make the simple play over and over again.

He also made sure to point out that Yaxel felt terrible and was not happy with the number of turnovers he had.

Correcting Turnovers

Throughout their history, even during the dynasty years, the Warriors are a high-turnover team. Their up-tempo offense and ability to move the ball generate plenty of great looks, but it also causes more steal attempts or passes that might be off target.

The team was able to overcome those turnovers because they had Steph Curry and his elite shooting ability, played great team defense, and generated plenty of offense when they weren’t handing it back to the other team.

Yaxel will have more turnovers throughout his rookie season; it’s the nature of how the Warriors play. The goal is to go from seven to three or four, while still putting up the points he’s putting up and adding to his assist totals.

Right now, he has 20 assists to 18 turnovers. The Warriors are looking for a more 2:1 ratio, which is where Steph Curry is at in his career.
