Steve Kerr addresses Brandin Podziemski's new contract.

This offseason has been about taking care of their own, and the Golden State Warriors continued to do just that over the weekend when they signed Brandin Podziemski to a five-year, $110 million contract extension.

Podziemski was set to become a restricted free agent in the offseason, but instead of seeing how the year played out with the fourth-year guard out of Santa Clara, the Warriors decided to lock him up before next offseason.

The Warriors re-signed Al Horford, Gary Payton II, Kristaps Porzingis, DeAnthony Melton, and Draymond Green this offseason, while also giving Steph Curry a new extension before locking up Podziemski.

Steve Kerr Speaks

Speaking to the media after it was announced that Podziemski had signed a contract extension, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called it a win-win.

Kerr said that Brandin is a heck of a player and is a big part of their future. “He secures his future, and it’s a deal that makes a lot of sense based on our numbers.”

He said that it’s a big relief to get the deal done and that now the focus can be on basketball. “He should be very proud of the work he’s done to get to this place and put himself in this position.”

Podziemski has increased his scoring from 9.2 points in his rookie year to 11.7 points in his sophomore year, and 13.8 points last season.

He’s maintained his three-point shooting and increased his volume, shooting 38% on 3.2 attempts his rookie year and 37% on five attempts last season.

With this deal, the Warriors are betting that Podziemski will continue to show improvement in all areas moving forward.

The Flexibility Of The Contract

The Warriors still have plenty of flexibility moving into next offseason, even with Podziemski’s new deal.

Podziemski had a cap hold of $17 million next offseason as a restricted free agent. His new deal will start at $18.9 million, so they are only taking away less than $2 million in cap space with this deal.

The team can still create plenty of cap space by letting Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green hit unrestricted free agency and opting to release Kristaps Porzingis, whose deal is only worth $3 million guaranteed.

Podziemski’s deal also doesn’t kick in until next season, providing them with plenty of flexibility going into this season and the trade deadline, where they have multiple first-round picks at their disposal to try and bring another star to The Bay.
