The Golden State Warriors have had an up-and-down season in various ways, whether it's been their health, the quality of their play on the court, or off-court discussions about a multitude of topics.
One player has perhaps been the epitome of all this for the Dubs this season: De'Anthony Melton. The 7th-year veteran guard came back from a torn ACL he suffered early last season back in December and has worked his way into being a key part of the rotation for the Warriors, but it hasn't been without its fair share of struggles.
Melton has only been able to play one back-to-back this season as he continues to get back to full strength, and though his scoring averages are at career-highs, largely due to the offensive load he is shouldering, his efficiency are still sitting at relatively poor marks on the year.
Steve Kerr Speaks On Melton's Recent Struggles
The past few games haven't been kind to Melton, as he posted 0-point games last Monday against the Mavericks and again on Sunday against the Nuggets.
Steve Kerr provided insight into Melton's recent struggles and reiterated his faith in the guard.
"He's banged up. His thumb is really bothering him and I think he's pressing a bit. He's dribbling into traffic ... He's had a great season. Last couple games have been tough, but he's been banged up and we'll help him get right."
Melton did miss the Wizards game on Friday, officially due to injury management for his knee, but it is likely that this thumb issue could have been a factor as well to try to buy Melton some extra rest down the stretch.
Melton Continues Career-High Scoring Load
Despite the recent dip in production, Melton's season as a whole has still been one of his better ones, especially from a pure scoring standpoint.
Though his efficiency isn't great — 41% from the field and 28.4% from three are well below both his career averages and the league average — his 12.7 points per game are more than a point and a half better than his previous best in a season.
He's also doing it in just 22.9 minutes per game, third behind his two seasons with his most recent team prior to arriving in the Bay Area, the Philadelphia 76ers.
The advanced stats back up Melton's impact, as well, even amidst the poor shooting splits. By net rating, the Warriors' offense is 6.6 points better with Melton on the floor, while the defense is 3 points better, making for a staggering on-off net rating of +9.6.
Even if Melton's production isn't as stable or efficient as one would hope, there's no doubt that his health is of the utmost importance so that his impact can help lead the Warriors in the final stretch of the regular season and into the postseason.
