The 0-2 Warriors will look for their first win of the season without their superstar.
The Golden State Warriors will be without Stephen Curry on their trip to Phoenix on Saturday, in the second half of a back-to-back.
Per a report from Anthony Slater, Curry was ruled out due to injury management earlier today, as were Brandin Podziemski (back), who missed the season opener, and Al Horford. Draymond Green is listed as doubtful.
Winless through their first two games, the Warriors were already in a peculiar position depth-wise, with Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody, and Kristaps Porzingis all out for the foreseeable future. Removing four more bodies could spell a catastrophe.
To make matters worse, the Suns will be desperate to bounce back at home after a humbling 124-83 curtain-raising defeat in Portland on Wednesday, in which they trailed by 29 points after the first quarter.
Season In Jeopardy Early
D. Ross Cameron-Imagn ImagesThough understandable, the Warriors' circumstances just two games into the new season are far from ideal, especially given the kind of loss they are recovering from heading into Phoenix.
Golden State lost to the Memphis Grizzlies 111-108 on Friday despite leading by 12 points with 3:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. It was the kind of gut punch Curry and co. are probably itching to dust themselves off from, but they can't.
Curry, 38, needs his minutes managed at this stage — though he said he would talk to the Warriors' medical staff about playing after last night's game — as does Horford, 40. Green, 36, is in a similar boat but hasn't been officially scratched yet.
Podziemski would have been in line to play today, but the Warriors clearly want to tread carefully after an unexpected back issue kept him out of the Los Angeles Lakers game on Wednesday. He scored 18 points in 33 minutes against Memphis.
That type of caution is fine on steady ground. However, a defeat in Phoenix could have the Warriors on the doorstep of starting the season 0-6, with trips to Denver and Minnesota and a home rendezvous with the Lakers on the horizon in their next three games.
No Clear Solution
Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesA trade comes to mind as a potential solution, or at least an attempt to fix the Warriors' issues, with the franchise reportedly looking at potential destinations for Porzingis.
However, the manner of defeat against the Grizzlies suggests that Golden State may be more than one player away from being above water.
The rebuilding Grizzlies rattled off a 17-0 run down the stretch to snatch the win at Chase Center, and there appeared to be nothing the Warriors could have done about it.
On a night when Curry led the team in scoring — albeit inefficiently, with 24 points (5-for-15 FG, 3-for-10 3PT) — and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg chipped in 18 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists, the Warriors still couldn't get over the line.
The problem likely stems from years of passive roster building around Curry, who is still performing at an elite level in year 18.
Historically, long-term issues are tough to resolve quickly. But a third straight defeat to start the season would press the Warriors' backs firmly against the wall, perhaps prompting action from the front office.
