The Warriors are linked to LeBron James, but his arrival is starting to slow down.
The Golden State Warriors were viewed as one of the early favorites to land LeBron James after the future Hall of Famer entered free agency, but recent reports suggest their chances may be fading.
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, the Warriors still remain on James' shortlist of preferred destinations, but there is growing belief within the organization that Golden State is no longer the frontrunner to sign the four-time NBA champion.
"The Warriors, meanwhile, have been given indications from James that they remain on his short list, but team sources have expressed a recent belief that they aren't necessarily at the top of that short list, as James continues to survey the landscape."

That development comes as several teams continue pursuing James, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. While Golden State remains firmly in the race, its path to completing a deal has become increasingly complicated.
One of the biggest obstacles is the Warriors' financial situation.
Warriors Activity
Golden State has already been active during free agency, agreeing to deals with Kristaps Porziņģis, De'Anthony Melton and Al Horford as it attempts to maximize what remains of Stephen Curry's championship window.
Those additions have strengthened the roster, but they have also limited the franchise's salary flexibility.

According to ESPN, the Warriors still have ways to create enough cap space to offer James the $15.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception, though doing so would require additional roster maneuvering.
The challenge is determining whether those moves are worth making without any guarantee James ultimately chooses Golden State.
Unlike previous years, James is not expected to rush his decision. His free agency has become one of the biggest storylines of the NBA offseason, with multiple contenders willing to wait while he evaluates the best situation to continue his career.
For the Warriors, the appeal is obvious.

Pairing James alongside Curry would immediately create one of the league's most experienced and accomplished duos, and FUN to see. Even at this stage of his career, James remains one of basketball's premier playmakers and would fit naturally within Steve Kerr's offensive system.
His ability to create offense, rebound and defend multiple positions would address several of Golden State's weaknesses while easing the burden on Curry.
However, the Warriors are no longer the only contender capable of offering an attractive basketball situation.

Cleveland offers James the opportunity to return home once again, while Miami remains a familiar destination with championship aspirations.
As James weighs his options, Golden State appears to be losing momentum.
The Warriors have already improved their roster this offseason, but waiting indefinitely carries its own risks. Every day spent holding cap flexibility for James limits the organization's ability to pursue alternative upgrades elsewhere in free agency.

At some point, Golden State may have to decide whether continuing to chase James is worth sacrificing opportunities to strengthen the roster in other areas.
Until James announces his decision, the Warriors cannot be counted out completely. He reportedly continues to view them as one of his preferred destinations, and the possibility of teaming with Curry remains one of the league's most intriguing scenarios.
Still, recent reporting suggests the momentum has shifted.
Golden State entered free agency believing it had a realistic opportunity to sign James. Now, with additional teams emerging and financial hurdles becoming more difficult to clear, the Warriors appear to be losing ground in one of the biggest pursuits of the 2026 NBA offseason.
