LeBron James has been linked to the Warriors in the past week, but he could be headed elsewhere.
The Golden State Warriors have long been viewed as one of the teams to watch in the LeBron James sweepstakes, but a new report suggests they may not be the four-time NBA champion's preferred destination.
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, the Warriors believe they are currently not at the top of James' shortlist of potential landing spots. That uncertainty could push Golden State to become more aggressive in its pursuit if the organization believes there is a realistic opportunity to acquire the future Hall of Famer.
While speaking on ESPN, Slater reported that the Warriors recognize they may have ground to make up compared to other teams in the race for James.
As a result, Golden State could look to strengthen its pitch by making additional win-now moves that would increase the appeal of joining the franchise.
The Warriors are one of the few contenders with the flexibility and draft capital to make another significant trade. After preserving much of their future draft assets, Golden State is in a position to package multiple picks and young talent if the front office decides another blockbuster move is necessary.

Adding another established star or high-level role player could make the Warriors a more attractive destination while also improving their chances of competing for another NBA championship.
The possibility of James changing teams has dominated much of the NBA offseason, with several contenders monitoring his situation closely. Although no move appears imminent, teams around the league continue evaluating ways to position themselves should the opportunity arise.
Golden State has previously been linked to James, largely because of the mutual respect between him and Warriors star Stephen Curry.

The two have battled throughout their careers, meeting in four consecutive NBA Finals from 2015 through 2018 before becoming teammates while leading Team USA to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The prospect of James and Curry finally joining forces at the NBA level has fueled speculation for years. Pairing two of the greatest players in league history would instantly elevate the Warriors into the championship conversation and create one of the most accomplished duos the sport has ever seen.
However, Slater's report indicates Golden State understands it is not currently leading the race.

That reality could influence how aggressively the front office approaches the remainder of the offseason, especially if it believes improving the roster could increase its chances of convincing James that the Warriors offer his best opportunity to compete for another title.
For now, Golden State has the resources to make another major move if necessary. Whether that move ultimately persuades James remains to be seen, but the Warriors appear prepared to remain active as speculation surrounding his future continues.
