Do the Warriors have a shot at landing LeBron James?
LeBron James informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he'll be moving on from the team after eight seasons as he explores free agency in the offseason.
LeBron wants to play "meaningful, competitive basketball" and is reportedly willing to take less money if it means competing for a championship.
Entering his 24th season, LeBron showed last year that he still has plenty of juice left in the tank, especially on a team that will offer him a first or second star to lessen his load. With Luka Doncic sidelined, LeBron was the best player on the Lakers during the playoffs as they advanced past the first round by defeating the Houston Rockets.
What Will LeBron Do Next?
Speaking on 95.7 The Game, Warriors insider Nick Friedell says that LeBron is currently deciding between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Warriors have long been linked to LeBron, with reports indicating that LeBron and Steph Curry were scheduled to meet in the offseason, with Curry attempting to recruit LeBron.
Curry and LeBron played on Team USA, winning a gold medal together in 2024. Though they've had multiple battles in the NBA Finals, there is a lot of mutual respect between the two greatest players of this generation.
LeBron is also close friends with Draymond Green, who opted out of his contract to potentially take less money to make room for LeBron.
There are also rumors of the Warriors potentially trying to trade for Anthony Davis, who won a title with LeBron and the Lakers in 2020.
Who Has The Inside Edge?
Cleveland is home for LeBron. It's where he started his career, it's where he won a championship in 2016, it's where he grew up, has family, a school, and more.
As currently constructed, the Cavaliers are closer to competing for a championship than the Warriors are. The Cavaliers made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, and while they didn't win a game against the New York Knicks, they did beat the top seed to get to the conference finals.
Meanwhile, the Warriors didn't even make the playoffs.
If the Warriors are able to land Anthony Davis, that will change the scenario a bit as they would then have a starting lineup of Steph Curry, Brandin Podziemski, LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Anthony Davis with Kristaps Porzingis, Yaxel Lendeborg, De'Anthony Melton, and Al Horford coming off the bench.
Is that team a championship contender? It certainly gets them closer than where things currently stand for the Warriors.
