How concerned are the Golden State Warriors with Kristaps Porzingis?
The Golden State Warriors are unsure what the future holds with Kristaps Porzingis as he’s been unable to practice due to health issues.
Ahead of training camp, the Warriors announced that Porzingis would miss time with health issues, but did not disclose the issues that would cause his absence. Porzingis has battled various health issues and injuries over the years, including bouts with a prolonged upper respiratory viral illness and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
ESPN’s Anthony Slater stated that Porzingis’ health absence and timetable for a return remains indefinite.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that he hasn’t seen Porzingis yet and that his health issues are concerning.
Porzingis remained in the Bay Area while the Warriors traveled to Hawaii for training camp and their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Kerr was unsure of the medical staff that stayed behind with Porzingis.
Cause For Concern
Porzingis has played just 74 games in the past two seasons due to injuries and health concerns. He won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2024, but appeared in only seven games during their title run.
Despite his health concerns, the Warriors traded Jonathan Kuminga for him at the 2026 NBA trade deadline, hoping that he could stay healthy and be an extra weapon on both ends of the floor.
Cary Edmondson-Imagn ImagesHe appeared in 15 games for the Warriors after the trade, averaging 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. In the offseason, he signed a two-year, $40 million contract with a player option on the second year.
Moving Forward
The Warriors will have to do their best without Porzingis on the floor while continuing to support him and hope everything turns out okay.
When he was acquired at the deadline, it was easy to see how he fit the structure of the team, as he can do a bit of everything on both ends of the floor, even if his overall athleticism has declined with age and injuries.
He and Steph Curry played well off of each other during their limited minutes, and he had a strong chemistry with Brandin Podziemski.
Without Porzingis, and with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody sidelined to start the season, the Warriors are lacking firepower as they look to keep up with some of the contenders in the West.
The best hope for the Warriors is that Porzingis is able to get healthy early enough to still be an impactful player when they need him.
