This past Saturday, the Golden State Warriors and Dub Nation breathed a sigh of relief as news broke that the front office and Steve Kerr had agreed to a new two-year contract, keeping Kerr as head coach of the Warriors.
Kerr will reportedly remain the highest-paid coach in the NBA, and though the contract's dollar amount has not been revealed yet, his salary last year was around $17.5 million. It's assumed that this contract will have an average annual value around that mark, as well.
With the Warriors securing the 11th pick in the NBA Draft at Sunday's draft lottery, their offseason has begun to have some life to it after three weeks of back-and-forth centered around the uncertainty of Kerr's future.
Warriors GM Is 'Thrilled' To Have Kerr Back
The new contract was made official by the Warriors in a press release on Tuesday morning. Though it didn't contain any new information about Kerr's contract that we didn't already know from reports, it did break the silence from Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.
"We’re thrilled that Steve’s tenure with the Warriors will continue. His impact on our franchise has been enormous, well beyond the championships and incredible on-court success. The character and leadership that he exudes each day helps set the tone for what we hope our franchise represents both now and in the future."
Kerr also gave his first quote since the re-signing in this same press release.
"I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue coaching this team. This organization has meant so much to me for the last 12 years – from ownership to our players, our staff and our fans – and it’s an incredible privilege to be a part of something so special. I’m excited to keep competing with this group."
It's pretty much what you'd expect out of quotes from an official press release, but it's still good to hear from the two parties and understand they're on the same page moving forward.
Kerr Set To Continue Impressive Coaching Career
With this new contract. Kerr will continue the impressive coaching career he's had in the Bay Area. In his 12 years as head coach, Kerr has become the winningest head coach in franchise history with a 63.1% win rate and has notably helped lead the Warriors to four championships.
Kerr was named the Coach of the Year after the 2015-16 season when the Warriors won a record 73 games in the regular season, and became the fourth-fastest coach to reach 600 regular-season victories, after Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and Gregg Popovich, back in March.
Kerr has also won a gold medal as head coach at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and won five championships of his own as a player with the Bulls and Spurs.
All in all, Kerr has had a legendary career, and though the upcoming years might not have the clear-cut contention the Warriors have had in the past, it's never wise to bet against Kerr when he's with his core guys, such as Steph Curry and Draymond Green.
