As the Golden State Warriors enter the offseason after their season was cut short following a loss to the Phoenix Suns in the Play-In Tournament, all eyes now turn to the front office.
Led by general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and owner Joe Lacob, the top brass of the Warriors' franchise will have many decisions to make in the coming weeks and months, including the fate of Steve Kerr, potentially re-signing Kristaps Porzingis and De'Anthony Melton, extending players like Brandin Podziemski, selecting a lottery pick in the NBA Draft come June, or even perhaps swinging a big trade or free agent signing.
Dunleavy Reportedly Already Signed An Extension
Despite expectations, the first shocking reporting surrounding the Warriors in the offseason wasn't a decision on Kerr, a signing, or a trade. Instead, it was reports about Dunleavy's contract.
ESPN reporters Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater reported on Monday that team sources said Dunleavy "quietly signed an extension in recent months" and now has "multiple years left on his deal."
It's a big show of faith from Lacob and the Warriors' ownership ahead of what may be the most important offseason for the Warriors in a long time. This also comes amidst outside noise regarding the front office vacancy in Chicago, another team that Dunleavy played for in his career.
Shelburne and Slater also reported that there is "an internal belief that Dunleavy has drafted well" and that he has gained the trust of Lacob, Kerr, Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler, who have "all only talked well of him."
What Moves Has Dunleavy Made?
Since Dunleavy succeeded Bob Myers as the Warriors' GM in June 2023, he's had a bit of an up-and-down track record.
Of course, the main thing that jumps out is the missed playoffs in two of his three years at the helm in 2024 and this year. That obviously pales in comparison to Myers' run from 2012 to 2023, which consisted of 9 playoff runs in 11 years, but the difference in player quality definitely contextualizes it.
In terms of direct decisions Dunleavy has made, let's first look at the NBA Draft. In the three drafts that Dunleavy has been the GM, the Warriors currently have Brandin Podziemski, Quinten Post, and Will Richard on the roster. All three of them were solid contributors this season, especially Podziemski, who was the lone Warrior to play all 82 games.
Dunleavy also has a good track record in terms of trades made. The two notable ones came at the trade deadline the past two seasons: trading Andrew Wiggins and a few other players for Jimmy Butler last year, and trading Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield for Kristaps Porzingis this year.
Both moves were made with a "win-now" mentality, and if injuries didn't derail either of the seasons, these trades could be looked upon even more favorably than they already are.
However, the issue that some people take with Dunleavy is the trades and signings he didn't make. Many believed that Kuminga should have been traded earlier than this year's trade deadline and would have garnered a much bigger haul. Rumors had reportedly listed players like Paul George or Lauri Markkanen as potential pick-ups if Dunleavy and the Warriors pulled the trigger sooner.
Ultimately, Dunleavy is seen in a favorable light by those within the Warriors' franchise, which is largely what matters. Now, it'll come down to him and the rest of the front office making the correct decisions to put the Warriors in a good position heading into next season.
