Are the Golden State Warriors in for a big trade deadline?
The Golden State Warriors have had a relatively quiet offseason, failing to make a major splash in free agency or the trade market despite being linked to big names.
The Warriors have re-signed Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and DeAnthony Melton, but lost Quentin Post to an offer sheet courtesy of the Memphis Grizzlies.
The team had talks with LeBron James, who was an unrestricted free agent after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers, but LeBron opted to head back to the Eastern Conference for the first time in eight seasons, signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.
They were also reportedly in talks with the Boston Celtics to acquire Jaylen Brown, but a deal never got done, and Brown was traded to the 76ers.
The Warriors will be returning Steph Curry, who is still playing at an All-Star level, but will be without Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody to start the season.
A Big Trade Deadline?
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Warriors will be monitoring teams that are under pressure to compete for a championship if they are ultimately falling short.
The team mentioned is the Houston Rockets, who could move on from Kevin Durant if the season isn't going their way. Siegel mentions that the Warriors have not moved on from reuniting Durant with Curry.
The duo won two championships together in 2017 and 2018, and made the finals in 2019, before Durant signed with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2019 offseason.
The Warriors tried to acquire Durant at the 2025 trade deadline from the Phoenix Suns, but Durant wasn't interested in returning to the Warriors. The Suns held onto him through the end of the season before trading him to the Rockets in the offseason.
Will Patience Pay Off?
There is no guarantee that Durant will be available at the trade deadline, as the Rockets still have championship aspirations and could be one of the top teams in the West this season if certain players are able to take the next step in their development.
There is also no guarantee that Durant will suddenly be open to rejoining the Warriors after turning them down in 2025.
Finally, there is no guarantee that the Warriors will be in a competitive spot come the 2027 trade deadline given their injuries to start the season, the overall age of their team, and the fact that they are effectively running back a tenth seed that didn't make the playoffs last season.
