Draymond Green is staying in Golden State after the Warriors fell short in their pursuit of LeBron James, keeping one of the franchise's cornerstones in place.

The Golden State Warriors are bringing back one of the franchise's most important players.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Draymond Green has agreed to a one-year, $27.7 million contract to remain with the Warriors.

The deal matches the contract Green previously opted out of earlier this offseason, a move that gave Golden State additional financial flexibility to pursue LeBron James in free agency.

After missing out on James, who officially signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Warriors quickly turned their attention toward retaining Green, ensuring the four-time NBA champion will continue alongside Stephen Curry.

Warriors Keep Their Defensive Leader

Green has spent his entire 14-year NBA career with Golden State after being selected with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft out of Michigan State.

Although his offensive production has declined in recent seasons, Green remains one of the league's premier defensive players and emotional leaders. Last season, the 36-year-old averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 68 games while once again anchoring Golden State's defense.

His resume speaks for itself.

Green is a four-time NBA champion, four-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA selection, nine-time All-Defensive Team selection and the 2016-17 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. His versatility on the defensive end and ability to facilitate the offense have made him a key piece of the Warriors' dynasty alongside Curry.

While Green may no longer fill the box score the way he once did, his leadership, defensive communication and basketball IQ continue to make him one of the organization's most valuable veterans.

LeBron Pursuit Comes Up Short

Green's return also closes the chapter on Golden State's pursuit of James.

The Warriors created additional salary flexibility after Green opted out of his previous contract, hoping to position themselves for a legitimate chance at signing the four-time NBA MVP. Throughout the offseason, Golden State was viewed as one of several teams monitoring James' situation before he ultimately chose Philadelphia.

Once James agreed to join the 76ers, the Warriors pivoted quickly, prioritizing Green's return rather than leaving one of their foundational players on the open market.

The move also comes as Golden State reportedly prepares for contract extension discussions with Curry later this summer, giving the franchise continuity with two of the most recognizable faces from its championship era.

While the Warriors fell short in their pursuit of one of the biggest names in NBA history, bringing back Green ensures the team's defensive identity and veteran leadership remain intact. As Golden State looks to stay competitive in a deep Western Conference, the franchise will once again rely on the longtime partnership of Curry and Green to lead the next chapter.
