The Golden State Warriors have many questions to answer this offseason, starting first and foremost with what Steve Kerr's role will be. For the past 12 years, Kerr has been the leader on the bench as the head coach and has been extremely successful, but a myriad of factors may lead to his departure, depending on the conversations that will be had in the next couple of weeks between Kerr and the Warriors' front office.
Of course, Kerr's status would greatly shape how the rest of the Warriors' offseason will play out. If he is not returning, they'll first have to find a new coach before addressing anything else, and it would likely play a role in the decisions that prospective players may make in free agency, whether it's players coming from other teams or even players currently with the Warriors.
Warriors Roster May Be Overhauled If Kerr Leaves
A new report came out on Sunday from NBA reporter Marc Stein. The major takeaway that Stein reported was simple and straight to the point.
"There is a growing belief that the roster overhaul around Steph Curry could prove to be more drastic if Kerr is no longer the coach."
Right now, expectations are that the Warriors would try to "run it back" in a sense if Kerr were to stay. With Curry as the centerpiece, Draymond Green as the veteran defensive anchor, Jimmy Butler as a secondary star, and other role players, the Warriors maintained that they had a quality team this season outside of unforeseen injuries.
However, Kerr's leaving would signal a changing of the guard, and that philosophy about the current roster's talent seems like it'd go out the window. It thus raises a whole host of questions, from which players may remain, who they'd try to go after in free agency or trades to rebuild the roster, and potentially if Curry might not even be safe.
The report stating the roster overhaul would be around Curry is reassuring, but with one year left on his contract, a cutthroat business decision isn't necessarily off the table to get some value out of the franchise legend through a trade rather than seeing him walk away in 2027 in free agency.
What Players May Be Safe?
As the current roster stands, it's definitely built for contention. Out of the main rotation that played in the Warriors' Play-In Game, six of the eight were on their fourth contract in the NBA, at minimum. Only Brandin Podziemski and Gui Santos were on rookie contracts, and even when extending it to a 10-man rotation to include the two injured players that would have played, Butler and Moses Moody split to make it three young players and seven veterans.
A roster overhaul may mean a retooling, trading away certain pieces or signing different archetypes to try a different style of basketball around Curry, especially if a potential new coach were to install a new offensive and/or defensive system, but it could just as likely mean a rebuild.
In the case of a rebuild, a lot of those veterans would be on their way out. Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and De'Anthony Melton would almost certainly find another team that could use their services for playoff and championship contention, and Green and Gary Payton II could join that group, too, depending on how much their loyalty to Golden State weighs.
Realistically, players like Podziemski, Santos, Moody, and Will Richard would be the only ones safe in a scenario like this, representing the future of the Warriors as capable young players.
If that happens at all, there might be a very different vibe in the Bay Area with the projected success, or perhaps lack thereof, the Warriors would have.
