Stephen Curry can secure another massive contract immediately, but waiting could give the Warriors their best chance to rebuild around him.
Stephen Curry will become eligible for another contract extension Aug. 29, presenting the Golden State Warriors with one of the easiest decisions in franchise history — and one of their most complicated financial choices.
Curry can sign a two-year extension worth approximately $136.7 million, keeping him under contract through the 2028-29 season. If the 38-year-old asks for the deal, Golden State is expected to give it to him without hesitation.
However, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst believes both sides should consider waiting.
Why Curry could delay his decision
“There’s still players becoming contract extension eligible,” Windhorst said. “By next week, you’ll start to see Steph Curry’s name come up. On the 29th of August, he’s extension eligible for his contract.”
Windhorst noted that Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green are entering the final years of their contracts. If Curry does not extend immediately, Golden State could potentially create more than $100 million in salary-cap space next summer.
The exact amount would depend on the Warriors’ roster decisions, cap holds and where the league sets the 2027-28 salary cap. Still, waiting would preserve significantly more flexibility than immediately adding Curry’s extension to the books.
That space could allow Golden State to pursue a star, divide the money among several rotation players or restructure its aging core around Curry.
Curry would not necessarily be sacrificing money permanently. As Windhorst argued, the Warriors are likely to offer him another lucrative contract regardless of when negotiations take place.
Warriors will let Curry control talks
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy has repeatedly expressed confidence that Curry wants to finish his career with the only franchise he has represented.
Curry is entering his 18th season after appearing in 41 games during an injury-plagued 2025-26 campaign. Golden State finished 37-45 and missed the playoffs, increasing pressure on the front office to build another competitive roster around its franchise icon.

He has delivered four championships and transformed Golden State into one of the league’s most valuable organizations.
Expect the discussions to remain cooperative rather than contentious.
If Curry wants the security of approximately $137 million, the deal should be completed quickly. If he trusts the organization and prioritizes maximum flexibility, he could play out the season before negotiating a new contract next summer.
Either outcome likely ends with Curry remaining in Golden State. The real question is whether he signs now or gives the Warriors one final opportunity to aggressively reshape the roster around him.
Curry becomes eligible Aug. 29 for a two-year, $136.7 million extension, while Dunleavy has publicly said he expects the star to finish his career with Golden State.
