The Golden State Warriors need a backup plan if LeBron James doesn't join the team.

The Golden State Warriors have been linked to LeBron James this offseason as LeBron has a future to make about his decision and the Warriors look to maximize the final years of Steph Curry.

While LeBron may not put the Warriors at the top of the Western Conference above the San Antonio Spurs or Oklahoma City Thunder, it does move them back into the playoffs, where they were absent from this past season.

LeBron will ultimately control where he lands next as he is an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team or try to work out a sign-and-trade between the Lakers and his next destination.

The Warriors might have their sights set on LeBron, but what happens if things don't work out?

If LeBron James Doesn't Work Out

NBA ESPN senior writer Marc J Spears appeared on 95.7 The Game and said the Warriors need to get creative if they don't land LeBron.

"Somebody that's close to [LeBron James] suggested to me that he was staying in LA. The Warriors need to be creative from a veteran standpoint to bring somebody else in that could give an extra boost to this team," he said.

Spears suggested that the Warriors may need to look at Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Giannis Antetokounmpo, or DeMar DeRozan at possible options if they are unable to sign "The King."

All four players are all under contract with their current teams, though they have been involved in recent trade rumors.

Spears also suggested that the Warriors find a way to bring back Kristaps Porzingis, who they acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga at the NBA trade deadline.

Can The Warriors Get Anything Done?

Porzingis could return on a cheap short-term deal as he tries to prove that he can stay healthy and contribute to a winning franchise. If the price is right, retaining him would be a good move.

Jimmy Butler's contract is an issue as he is owed $56 million and is likely to miss at least the first half of the season. Butler and Curry already take up 72% of the cap. It's possible they can trade Butler's contract, likely with picks attached, for cap relief and players who can contribute immediately when the season starts.

Draymond has a player option worth $27.6 million, though he may opt out and re-sign at a lower price.

They do have the 11th overall pick in the 2026 draft, which is a big trade chip, though it shouldn't be used for a player like DeMar DeRozan.

The Warriors will have options, and they need to explore all options to ensure the final years of Curry are spent in the playoffs.
