The Washington Wizards officially inked AJ Dybantsa, the top overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, on Thursday
AJ Dybantsa is officially a Washington Wizard.
The organization announced that Dybantsa, who became the top overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, has officially signed his four year contract worth $66.9 million on day three of free agency in the final procedural move.
His near $14.8 million cap hit is the second largest on the Wizards 2026-27 payroll, though it's well behind veteran Anthony Davis and his $58.5 million hit to account for over 35% of the team's cap. That could, of course, change during free agency if the Wizards opt for another seismic roster move, but that could be a longshot heading into the rest of July with the mid-level exception available to use to likely upgrade the frontcourt.
Dybantsa will now headline the Washington Wizards' roster in Summer League, which will open with all the spotlight with the first game set for next Thursday, July 9 against Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz. Dybantsa will then lead the Wizards into set games against the Sacramento Kings on July 12, then Chicago Bulls two days later followed by a late night meeting against the Los Angeles Clippers on July 15. Washington is set to play a fifth game, though date and opponent will be finalized following the completion of the four announced games.
Washington will now look to finalize its second draft pick when former Tennessee forward Felix Okpara signs his contract, which could materialize into the final two-way deal alongside Jamir Watkins and Julian Reese.
The Wizards also previously announced that Dybantsa will wear number four for the Wizards, the sum of his jersey numbers from both college and high school. He becomes the latest notable Wizard to wear the number after others like Russell Westbrook, Antawn Jamison, Chris Webber and Moses Malone. Dybantsa also became the franchise's first top overall pick since John Wall materialized into exactly that during the 2010 NBA Draft. It's a fitting ending for the Wizards given it was Wall who represented the franchise the night the draft order was officially set.
“Obviously, Wizards fans have been waiting for a long time," Dybantsa said at his introductory press conference. "We’re trying to make the playoffs, but like [general manager Will Dawkins] said, we don’t just want to make the playoffs, we want to go far in the playoffs.”
A full breakdown of Dybantsa's contract over the next four years:
2026-27: $14,748,000
2027-28: $15,485,760
2028-29: $16,223,040
2029-30: $20,457,254
