The Washington Wizards provided another injury update on star forward Anthony Davis with ongoing questions about whether he will be cleared to play during the 2025-26 season
With games dwindling ahead of the official end of the 2025-26 regular season, the Washington Wizards have provided another update on new forward Anthony Davis as questions loom whether a debut will end up materializing this summer.
But the good news is the Wizards announced that Davis has been "cleared for light contact as he progresses toward his full return" with the additional note that further updates will be provided "as appropriate." General manager Will Dawkins previously noted that Davis was still in Dallas receiving treatment where he was reevaluated once again by Dr. Steven Shin of Los Angeles Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Monday.
While the Wizards have been consistent that they will remain cautious with Davis in his recovery, the question has since shifted to whether the team will get a chance to actually see the former ten-time All Star actually suit up in a game this season. The team has not provided an update on Trae Young after he exited the game in the Wizards eight point loss against the Golden State Warriors on March 16, fueling questions about whether the former Hawks star point guard will also return to Washington this season.
Whether it matters if Davis ends up suiting up this year is its own question mark given the focus has been on draft position for Washington, and with the team currently tied with the Indiana Pacers for the league's worst record ahead of Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers, it begs the question if it's even realistic anymore.
Wednesday will also mark one of four remaining home games and one of seven to end the 2025-26 season.
Davis was acquired back on Feb. 4 in exchange for Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III and five total draft picks. The lone contributor for the Wizards from the trade has been Jaden Hardy, who is averaging 13.2 points while shooting over 46% from the field and nearly 44% from deep as part of the backcourt rotation. Dante Exum was waived shortly after the trade materialized while D'Angelo Russell has remained consistently out with a 'not with team' designation on the league's injury reports after Will Dawkins noted the two sides would work out the best fit.
While short-term questions about Davis' status persist, all eyes will be on his impact in what's expected to be a bounce back 2026-27 season with Davis and Young paired with Kyshawn George, Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington Will Riley and Tre Johnson.
