The Washington Wizards are set to close the 2026 Summer League schedule tonight as we dive into three key storylines to watch
Sitting at 2-2 overall after dropping the last two games, the Washington Wizards are set to close out Summer League tonight with tipoff set for 7 PM ET against the Atlanta Hawks. While it marks the first unofficial meeting between the two divisional teams, Washington enters with more to showcase despite being limited given AJ Dybantsa, Will Riley and Tre Johnson were already been ruled out earlier in the week. Still, we take a look at what's most important to watch for on Saturday evening:
Can backcourt duo cement spot ... maybe the biggest surprise of Summer League, to varying levels, has been the emergence of Reece Beekman and Seth Trimble. Both have carved out roles as defensive sparks with each notching multi-steal games, while Trimble is coming off an encouraging shooting performance against the Clippers to ease concerns. A second similar shooting night from Trimble may cement a spot at least on the Go-Go within the organization, but with another matchup against a lottery pick in Kingston Flemings, Saturday marks a chance to live up to their profile against a shifty point guard.
Frontcourt progress ... second round pick Felix Okpara was inactive for the second of the back-to-back that ended with a loss against the Los Angeles Clippers, but his status for the finale hasn't been announced with a chance for the former Tennessee forward to flash once more. Okpara's production has been limited so far despite flashing the athleticism and consistent motor he showcased as a draft prospect, and with the Wizards llkely staring at another shorthanded roster, could he step up in a second chance at elevated minutes?
Yet he isn't the only one after second-year center Julian Reese was inactive in Wednesday's loss with no specification why. For a player fighting for a spot on the Wizards' roster, that matters. Reese has struggled in his minutes thus far, averaging just 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 points while shooting 40% from the field, but the touch around the rim and movement without the ball has been lackluster after an encouraging showing to end his rookie season after signing from the G League. But whether he ends up with the Capital City Go-Go could be a question that Reese helps answer with one last showing with Henri Veesaar, former teammate of Trimble at North Carolina who was also a first round pick candidate, and former St. John's forward Zuby Ejiofor quality matchups to evaluate.
