With the expectation that it does materialize, one analyst paints a picture of what a reasonable contract extension could look like between Trae Young and the Washington Wizards.

With all the attention on the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards also have a handful of key roster decisions to make, but maybe none are bigger than how the Trae Young unfolds.

All signs point to the two sides expected to reach an agreement on a contract extension ahead of Young's near $49 million player option, though that will need to happen over the next five weeks given Young faces a June 22 deadline, per Spotrac, to either pick up the final year of his five-year deal or declare for free agency.

Bobby Marks pointed to Washington as the best fit for Young in his offseason free agency preview while pointing to a three, year $130 million contract as the sensible deal he would offer. Marks also noted the final year of Young's contract would also mark a player option, similar to the structure of his current deal, while potentially adding roughly $10 million in cap space by agreeing to an extension over the player option.

Whether a Young extension does materialize, as expected, will likely impact the team's draft outlook given Darryn Peterson emphasized his role as a point guard, which could complicate the fit in DC. As for Young, general manager Will Dawkins has been consistent that he's a key piece of the puzzle.

"We targeted players that we believe in, that fit our vision for sustained success," Dawkins said in January. "So he's a piece to the puzzle. I think he amplifies our young players at a high level. He's an elite creator and moves the ball forward in the direction we want to go."

Wizards fans got a chance to get a brief look into exactly that after averaging 17.9 points and eight assists in just 20.8 minutes across five appearances. Young would then go down in the second half against the Golden State Warriors back on March 15, but he's remained a key source of optimism for the fanbase into the offseason with all eyes on how the former Hawks point guard anchors what's expected to be a revamped and more competitive Wizards team in 2026-27.

With a chance to add star power to a backcourt that already features Tre Johnson and Bub Carrington in the rotation, time will tell whether the first domino falls for Wizards' front office to get there around the same time that Washington get to make their pick with the top overall pick in the draft.
