Tuscaloosa braces for a heavyweight collision as Alabama’s relentless pass rush and poised young quarterback face its ultimate litmus test against Georgia’s veteran, championship-caliber roster.
The Alabama Crimson Tide will face their toughest test yet when they welcome the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs to Tuscaloosa on Saturday night.
Nick Saban has described Georgia as one of college football's most complete teams, giving Alabama's young core a significant challenge in one of the season's biggest matchups.
There was some concern about the game being played after Hurricane Isaias posed a threat, but it seems like the game will be played according to schedule.
In this SEC-powerhouse matchup, we have a trio of keys to the game for the Crimson Tide.
Limit the Fireworks
As good as Alabama has been on the defensive end, the Tide is susceptible to let up explosive plays.
Georgia has done an OK job at generating explosive plays, but the Tide have let up at least one per game.
A lot of that will be based on reads or how they react to broken coverage. But after getting burned so many times, one would have to think Alabama knows what is coming.
Part of that will be the Havoc that the Tide generates, which they have done a fantastic job at. Alabama’s defense has generated Havoc on 20% of snaps, largely due to the pass rush led by Yhonzae Pierre, Devan Thompkins, Terrance Green and London Simmons.
One thing that will be interesting is that the Bulldogs will be without running back Chauncey Bowens, who has been more of a threat in the passing game. Starting back Nate Frazier will return though, after missing the first two with bruised ribs.
Outside of the explosive run they let up to South Carolina, the Tide has mostly been strong against the run. So it’ll be interesting to see how Frazier handles Alabama’s physicality.
How Will Keelon Fare?
One of the biggest aspects of this game is how quarterback Keelon Russell will handle the pressure of a top-five opponent.
This will likely be the toughest opponent Russell faces all season long, outside of the playoffs, but Russell has shown that pressure isn’t a big deal for him as much as it used to be.
The more accustomed to the collegiate level Russell became, the easier the game came to him.
Georgia’s defense has been great against the pass, but similar to its counterparts, the Bulldogs are prone to letting up explosive plays.
But Russell will either need to get the ball out quickly or his decisions need to be quick.
Alabama’s offensive line has been impressive this season, but it’s nowhere near where it needs to be. And facing Georgia’s defensive line, it puts that much more pressure on Russell.
Let Spider-Man Work
Perhaps you missed Ryan Coleman-Williams told the media that he was “literally like Spider-Man” after having a consecutive streak of four games without a drop.
Coleman-Williams made his mark on the college football landscape as a freshman against Georgia, when he posted 177 receiving yards and a touchdown. The next season, it wasn’t as successful, after going 5-for-43.
The difference is, Coleman-Williams’ struggles seem to be behind him. And the connection he’s formed with Russell has been impactful.
So far, Coleman-Williams is posting a career-high 18.8 yards per catch, and has already matched his 2025 touchdown total.
He’s easily Alabama’s most explosive player, and Georgia’s pass defense is ranked 131st against explosive plays, according to Action Network Analytics. It’ll be the perfect storm for No. 1.
