Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell has finally arrived.
The Alabama Crimson Tide played their most complete game of the season on Saturday, hammering the South Carolina Gamecocks by a score of 49-18 behind an incredible performance from quarterback Keelon Russell.
There was no slow start this time. Alabama came out and immediately stepped on South Carolina's throat, jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Russell.
The redshirt freshman went 21-for-27 with 365 yards and four touchdowns on the evening while also carrying the ball eight times for 35 yards and a score. It was a masterful outing from the kid who struggled so much against Kentucky in Week 2 but has righted the ship beautifully ever since.
It's also bad news for the rest of the country.
The quarterback position was a major question mark for the Crimson Tide entering 2026. Remember: Russell was battling Austin Mack for the starting job in camp.
But after the way Russell led Alabama to a 35-5 lead over South Carolina in Week 4, it now looks like 'Bama has the signal-caller spot figured out.
Yes, it's true that the Crimson Tide have yet to play a ranked opponent, but the Gamecocks were no pushovers. Russell just made them look elementary.
Considering how talented Alabama is overall and how Kalen DeBoer does appear to be settling into his head-coaching role at Tuscaloosa, it may be safe to officially call the Crimson Tide a national championship contender.
That was something most felt Alabama wasn't going into the campaign, which was why the Tide were placed in the middle of the pack of the initial top 25 rankings.
But things have obviously changed since then. Not just for the Crimson Tide, but around the nation, as well.
While other teams have stumbled, Alabama has found its rhythm, and that's thanks much in part to the early dominance of Russell.
The Crimson Tide are now about to face five straight tough opponents, four of whom are ranked. That will start with a trip to Mississippi State next weekend. So Alabama is about to face a major test with a murderer's role of challengers.
But given the way the Tide smacked South Carolina on Saturday and how incredibly well Russell is playing, something tells me they'll be alright.
Alabama might be a whole lot better than most anticipated, and much of that comes down to the developing situation under center.
