Five-star phenom Keelon Russell battles seasoned veteran Austin Mack as Kalen DeBoer weighs explosive potential against established trust to lead the Crimson Tide's post-Simpson era.
With Ty Simpson now in the NFL, Alabama's quarterback situation remains one of the biggest questions heading into the 2026 season.
And even with fall camp in full swing, we’re still far from a real answer.
There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of hype surrounding redshirt freshman Keelon Russell, a former five-star recruit, and the second-ranked quarterback in the 2025 class.
However, his partner in the quarterback room, Austin Mack has paid his dues.
Mack, a former four-star recruit, originally committed to the University of Washington with Kalen DeBoer, and then transferred to Alabama once DeBoer accepted the head coaching position for the Crimson Tide.
For three seasons, Mack had been a backup and was ready to go when Simpson moved on.
But Russell’s emergence may be the result of unforeseen circumstances.
Since coming back onto campus in 2026, Russell has opened eyes in a major way.
When offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was asked about the quarterback battle, it seemed like the decision was leaning one way.
"I would say Keelon did a better job of taking care of the football in the summer than he did the spring. Then with Austin, I thought he was better on the run out of the pocket. I thought he really grew in that regard."
That distinction could be important for Russell. One of the biggest questions surrounding his game coming into college was whether he could protect the football against SEC competition.
Two of the biggest questions on Russell’s game coming into college was 1) how would he perform under pressure in the SEC? And 2) how would he manage to protect the ball at the next level?
The skill wasn’t the question. Head coach Kalen DeBoer knew what he had in his star recruit, but he needed to see the progress in order to roll him out against SEC competition, and a big part of that is protecting the football.
If Russell has made meaningful progress in that area, the path toward him winning the starting job becomes much clearer.
At the same time, during Fall Camp, Mack was taking snaps with center Racin Delgatty and running back Daniel Hill – two projected starters, while Russell was taking snaps with Casey Poe and AK Dear.
Teams tend to swap quarterbacks around to generate chemistry with receivers and pair a proper cadence with their centers, so Mack being paired with Delgatty and Hill may be a nothing burger.
But we did see Mack finish out the Rose Bowl in January over Russell once Simpson got pulled out due to injury. Which indicates that there is already a trust built with DeBoer and Mack.
No one truly knows what Alabama’s plans are at quarterback, but there are speculations that Alabama wants Russell to be the starter.
If Russell isn't ready, Alabama won't have to look far for its answer. Mack has been waiting for this opportunity.
