EA Sports nailed the stats but missed the mark on the face scan, leaving the BYU cornerback and viral fans laughing at a bizarrely mistaken virtual identity.
EA Sports might have to go back to the drawing board.
The video game producer accidently gave BYU Cougars cornerback Cannon DeVries a whole new identity in College Football 27. And fans can't help but find humor in the mix-up. Even DeVries jumped in the comment section about his avatar for the game.
DeVries, a native of North Ogden, Utah, got the perfect stats and his No. 32 jersey in the game, but the face scan turned him into a completely different player. Those who received early access to play the game were quick to point out the error. This isn't the first of its kind. However, this might take the cake as the best. DeVries embraced it and knows sometimes mistakes happen.
Even Cosmo, BYU's mascot, hopped into action with his own take on social media.
There were similar glitches hitting other players, like Florida QB Aaron Philo with a mullet. Don't worry, EA Sports has been able to patch up issues in the past and will likely do the same in this case. When the first release came out in 2025, there were big issues with mascots and how they appeared on the sidelines. The company was quick to apply some updates for smoother game play.
DeVries came to Provo as a two-way player at running back, wide receiver and cornerback. As it turns out, he was skilled not only at many positions, but also at multiple sports. He competed in track and field with an 11.09 second time in the 100-meter dash. DeVries averaged 12.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals on the hardwood. The three-star was part of BYU's 2022 recruiting class before taking his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
EA Sports College Football 27 officially releases worldwide on July 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Early access is already underway for players who purchased the Deluxe Edition, MVP Bundle, or an MVP+ membership. The cheapest early-access route is the $99.99 Deluxe Edition, or the $149.99 MVP Bundle that packs in Madden NFL 27.
