Clemson Tigers quarterback Christopher Vizzina is on the hot seat before playing a single game in 2026.

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has named Christopher Vizzina the starting quarterback for the team's season opener against LSU this Saturday, but that's as far as Swinney will go.

Swinney has made it very clear that nothing is guaranteed for Vizzina, the former four-star recruit who is finally getting the chance to start full time in his redshirt junior campaign.

“CV has won the job, but I can’t give him a lifetime contract,” Swinney said. “He’s go to go do it. People say, ‘What do you need to see?’ Well, you go win some games. Go play well. This isn’t complicated. That’s just where you are.”

Essentially, if Vizzina doesn't play well very early, Swinney will have no qualms about pulling him in favor of freshman Tait Reynolds, who gave Vizzina a good run during spring practice and fall camp.

“Win. Win. Win,” Swinney said. “Be productive. Take care of the ball. Be a good decision-maker. Do the routine stuff well. Manage the game. He doesn’t have to be a superhero, we just need him to do his job within the system. I think that’s the main thing. So, you’ve got to produce.”

No pressure there.

It's very obvious that Vizzina is already on the hot seat before taking a single snap, so he must play well in Baton Rouge this weekend.

On one hand, it's a good thing, because we'll get to see what Vizzina is made of. If he comes out and has a tremendous performance in spite of all of the pressure, then that means Clemson might really have something under center.

But Swinney also said that Reynolds is expected to play against LSU, as well. What kind of message does that send to Vizzina and the team?

There might be a bit too much of a burden on the shoulders of Vizzina heading into Week 1, and that could ultimately derail both him and Clemson.

Vizzina arrived at Clemson in 2023 and finally made his first start last year, going 29-for-42 with 317 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU.

Now, the 21-year-old will get to be No. 1 on the depth chart for the first time ... unless Swinney doesn't like what he sees.
