Clemson Tigers quarterback Tait Reynolds has received a rather surprising ranking.

It hasn't looked pretty for Clemson Tigers quarterback Tait Reynolds, but he has done enough to catch some surprising attention.

In a recent ESPN piece that ranked the top 25 freshmen in the country thus far in 2026, Billy Tucker had Reynolds ranked 22nd, noting that while Reynolds hasn't posted big numbers, he has at least given Clemson a chance to win.

Well, maybe not last week against Miami, when the Tigers lost 41-13, but that certainly wasn't all Reynolds' fault. In fact, Reynolds went 29-for-44 with 295 yards. He threw an interception, but he certainly wasn't terrible.

Christopher Vizzina entered the season as Clemson's starting signal-caller, but it took him all of two games to lose his job.

Vizzina suffered an elbow injury in the Tigers' Week 2 win over Georgia Southern and was relieved by Reynolds early in the contest. Dabo Swinney then named Reynolds the full-time starter afterward.

Reynolds has proceeded to throw for 816 yards, a touchdown and three picks while completing 64.8 percent of his passes. The overall numbers aren't great, but the completion percentage is impressive for a true freshman, and there is no doubt that Reynolds has flashed some potential.

Swinney raved about Reynolds when Clemson landed hm as a three-star prospect, and it was clear all along in spring practice and fall camp that he was tempted to dub Reynolds the starter over Vizzina.

However, Swinney went with the more experienced Vizzina who started a game for the Tigers last year and looked pretty solid in the process. Obviously, that didn't lost.

Reynolds has a big arm and impressive mobility. He also possesses a fearlessness that is very notable for such a young quarterback.

The 19-year-old was unflappable heading into the Miami game, and he played the contest with a very noticeable poise.

Reynolds still has a very long way to go, but he absolutely has the chance to develop into a terrific quarterback for Clemson.

It would be nice if the Queens Creek, Az. native could get some help up front, as he has already been sacked 16 times this season, but part of that is also Reynolds not getting rid of the ball quick enough.

Clemson does have a very good wide receiver room led by T.J. Moore, Bryant Wesco and Tyler Brown, so Reynolds does have options. And he insists that the Tigers' offense has a chance to pop.

We'll see if Reynolds can ultimately lead Clemson back to prominence, starting with a matchup against Charleston Southern next Saturday.

The Tigers had a bye this weekend.
