The Clemson Tigers' quarterback battle is coming down to the wire.

The Clemson Tigers had their first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, and while there are position battles everywhere, the most notable is obviously at quarterback.

Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds are competing for the starting job, which comes as a surprise to most who expected Chris Denson to be Vizzina's primary competition back in the spring.

Nevertheless, Reynolds has obviously caught Dabo Swinney's attention, and when you hear Swinney speak, you get the hint that he probably prefers the true freshman (Reynolds) to the redshirt junior.

But Vizzina does have more experience, and he is, almost by default, the frontrunner to be taking snaps when the regular season opens at LSU on Sept. 5.

That does not mean anything has been decided, though.

Swinney said that both quarterbacks looked good in the scrimmage, noting that each signal-caller possesses good athleticism (although Swinney spoke more highly of Reynolds in that regard) and that both contestants did a fine job on Saturday.

He also mentioned that one of the two quarterbacks threw a pick-six, but he did not say who was responsible.

As for when Swinney plans on naming his starter? He isn't even sure he will have a starter until a few minutes before Week 1.

“We sure could. We sure could. We could be like Dan Brooks,” Swinney said about potentially picking a starter just before the LSU matchup, via The Clemson Insider.

Brooks is a former Clemson defensive line coach who is famous for not choosing starting defensive tackles until after kickoff.

Does it seem like Swinney will go in that direction with his quarterbacks? Probably not, but the two-time national champion does not seem to be in any hurry.

While this could be an indication that the competition is close, it also could be Swinney's method of ensuring that Vizzina does not get too comfortable at any point in 2026.

Even if Vizzina is named the starter (as expected), he will probably have a short leash. If he struggles over the first couple of games, Swinney might not waste any time going to Reynolds, and he has shown no qualms about throwing talented freshmen into the heat of battle in the past.

We'll see what Swinney ultimately decides over these next several weeks, but this is shaping up to be quite a drama-filled affair for the Tigers.
