Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is being very stubborn when it comes to the team's quarterback situation.

Just about everyone knows that Christopher Vizzina will be under center when the Clemson Tigers face LSU in their season opener this Saturday. Even LSU head coach Lane Kiffin specifically mentioned preparing for Vizzina.

So why isn't Dabo Swinney just announcing it already?

Swinney provided an "update" on Clemson's quarterback situation during his weekly radio show on Monday evening, and he refused to name a starter.

“We’re going to run somebody out there,” Swinney said. “We have been very thorough with how we’ve gone about camp. Chad [offensive coordinator Chad Morris] and Tajh [quarterbacks coach Tajh Boyd] have done a great job in trying to really challenge these guys and put them in all situations and have good evaluation."

That's all well and good, but with four days remaining between now and the opener, Swinney clearly knows who will be the starting quarterback.

He just isn't saying.

“And again, there’s only so much you can do in practice. It’s been a great competition," Swinney added. "And so, that’s where we are, and we’ve got to go play some games and see where it goes from there.”

Vizzina and Tait Reynolds have been battling for the quarterback job in camp, and while things appeared to be surprisingly close early on, Vizzina created some separation as the Tigers got deeper into the summer.

A former four-star recruit, Vizzina made one start last season, going 29-for-43 with 313 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU.

The 21-year-old is entering his redshirt junior campaign and is facing many question marks, but there is no question he has talent.

Meanwhile, Reynolds is a true freshman who was recruited as a three-star prospect out of Arizona. He has a big arm and possesses impressive athleticism, and he is certainly on deck. If Vizzina gets off to a slow start in 2026, Swinney would surely have no qualms switching to the younger signal-caller.

Perhaps that's why Swinney is being so stubborn with his announcement. It's entirely possible he is sending a message to Vizzina to not get too comfortable.

Clemson's quarterback situation will largely define its season, so hopefully, the Tigers get more than adequate results.
