Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has assigned blame for the team's struggles.

The Clemson Tigers suffered a devastating loss on Saturday, blowing a late lead in a home loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The defeat dropped Clemson to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in ACC play as the program continues to slip further into obscurity.

There was a time when the Tigers were one of the most feared teams in the country, but now, they have been a middle-of-the-road program with one of the nation's worst offenses.

So, who is to blame for Clemson's demise? While most would point to a flawed roster largely devoid of elite talent, head coach Dabo Swinney pointed the finger elsewhere: at himself and the rest of the coaching staff.

“It is on us as coaches,” he said. “I think I have to be better. The coaches have to be better, as well, and it starts with me.”

But there is only so much a coaching staff can do with a group of players that simply isn't all that talented.

Yes, Clemson has some terrific players on the defensive side of the ball. Cornerback Ashton Hampton, linebacker Sammy Brown and defensive end Will Heldt will all be in the NFL next season, and they all have a chance to be first-round picks.

Offensively, however, it's another story.

The Tigers' passing game is among the worst in college football thanks to poor play from quarterback Tait Reynolds, and the offensive line hasn't been up to snuff, either.

Clemson surely expected more from wide receivers T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco, but neither pass-catcher has produced to their level of capability this season.

While it's fair to say that the coaches deserve some culpability, this really starts with Swinney's roster construction, which hasn't been very good.

The Tigers' inability to land top-tier talent in the transfer portal has caused them to get left behind, and while Swinney can turn things around by utilizing the portal more effectively, Clemson might be reaching the point of no return.

There is no question the program's reputation has been damaged in recent years, and with so many other schools on the rise, the Tigers run the risk of falling even further into the abyss.

Clemson will face Florida State in Tallahassee next Saturday and has five games remaining on its schedule. At this point, the Tigers are just hoping to qualify for a bowl game.

It's truly astounding just how far Clemson has fallen since its glory days, which weren't even that long ago.

The Tigers went 7-6 last season. They may end up ending with a similar fate here in 2026.
