Is Clemson Tigers quarterback Tait Reynolds facing enough pressure from Dabo Swinney?
Clemson Tigers quarterback Tait Reynolds should not be guaranteed anything moving forward. He hasn't earned that right yet.
However, with the way Dabo Swinney has talked about his young signal-caller, there doesn't seem to be any alternative moving forward.
Internally, that's understandable. Christopher Vizzina had a chance to establish himself as the clear-cut starter early on, but he flopped in Clemson's season opener against LSU and then suffered an elbow injury in Week 2.
Reynolds was then named the official starter for the Tigers regardless of Vizzina's injury, and it doesn't appear that Vizzina — who is still recovering from the injury, by the way — has any chance of winning the job back.
But what about next season? What about potentially pursuing a quarterback via the transfer portal over the winter?
With Vizzina likely transferring and Trent Pearman's eligibility running out, Clemson will have to do something under center. It can't head into 2027 with Brock Bradley as its primary backup and incoming freshman Kharim Hughley as the only other signal-caller on the roster.
But perhaps the Tigers should also pursue someone who could replace Reynolds?
Swinney loves Reynolds' potential, and for good reason. Reynolds has a big arm, he's athletic and he is unflappable in the face of adversity. But he has thrown just one touchdown and three interceptions thus far in 2026.
Should he be facing some more pressure going forward to know that he isn't 100 percent guaranteed the starting job next fall?
Swinney doesn't like the transfer portal. We know this. He did display a marked shift last winter, though, netting 11 players in the portal. Ten of them were on the defensive side of the ball, however, and pursuing a quarterback was never on his radar.
Maybe that could change this time around?
Reynolds has seven games left to prove himself this season, and with not a single ranked opponent remaining on the schedule, he has a golden opportunity to make some noise.
But if he shows little to no sign of improvement, Swinney should not simply commit to Reynolds as his starter for 2027.
It's great that Swinney believes in Reynolds, but it might be important to let him know that he does need to perform well down the stretch in order for him to cement himself as Clemson's quarterback next season.
The Tigers will face Charleston Southern this Saturday. They are 3-2 on the campaign.
