Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney had a noticeably different tone during his postgame news conference on Saturday night than he used earlier in the season after blowout losses to LSU and Miami.

Those two losses came against College Football Playoff contenders. While the defeats didn't look good for the once-elite Tigers, it was somewhat easy to explain given the fact that Clemson was not the favorite in those contests. Swinney still believed the Tigers could wind up making a run against the rest of the ACC.

Clemson's 16-13 loss at home to Virginia Tech killed the narrative. Swinney's program lost to Virginia Tech, a team that is in Year 1 of head coach James Franklin. The defeat made Swinney realize that he needed to shift the program's goals for the rest of the season.

Around college football, the narrative has already shifted on Clemson.

During an appearance on The Matt Barrie Show on Sunday, ESPN's Paul Finebaum gave a brutal statement on what Clemson's loss meant to college football. He basically said it didn't matter.

In Swinney's prime, a Clemson loss was treated the same way an Alabama loss under Nick Saban would have been. Finebaum joked that he didn't know or care if the Tigers had lost three or four games.

That's where Clemson is before the end of October. The Tigers now have three losses and two losses in the ACC. There was a slim chance that Clemson could run the table in the ACC and get to the conference championship game, giving the team a chance to make the College Football Playoff.

Clemson no longer controls its destiny in the ACC or in the CFP. The Tigers will next go on the road to play Florida State. In the preseason, the contest against the Noles appeared to be a win for Swinney's team.

That's no longer the case.

Clemson is building for the future.

The Tigers’ season in 2026 will go down as a disappointment. It remains to be seen if they will have a better record than in 2025 when Clemson finished 7-6.

Swinney isn't sure about the offensive coaching staff, but he is confident in the abilities of quarterback Tait Reynolds. For the rest of the season, Clemson will work on developing Reynolds and its younger players.

The Tigers aren't devoid of talent, but they need more development to become a contender again.
