The Duke Blue Devils were the surprise of the ACC last season, winning the ACC with an 8-5 overall record.
The Blue Devils made the conference championship game with a 6-2 ACC record, good enough for a five-way tie for second place. After winning its bowl game, Duke received crushing news for the 2026 season when quarterback Darian Mensah bolted for Miami and the transfer portal.
The program appeared to be on the rise in the ACC, but the upcoming season could be a little rocky as head coach Manny Diaz continues to develop young players.
Here are three games that will define Duke's season this fall.
Duke at Georgia Tech (Oct. 10)
Georgia Tech was one of the five teams tied for second place in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets lost quarterback Haynes King to the NFL, and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner has the same position with Florida this season.
Needless to say, GT is going through some changes to its program, and this is a game Duke needs to pounce on to show they're ascending in the ACC. A road win over the Yellow Jackets would inspire confidence for the young team before playing a fairly favorable conference schedule.
Duke at NC State (Nov. 7)
NC State head coach Dave Doeren is usually a popular name on the hot seat list for ACC coaches pretty much every year. The Wolfpack have been the definition of "mid" for approximately a decade.
This is the type of game Duke needs to win to pad the win column in the ACC, especially with challenging games like Clemson and Miami on the schedule. A win over their rival in November would be huge for the Blue Devils and Diaz.
Duke has won its last three games against the Wolfpack.
Clemson at Duke (Nov. 20)
Less than a week after playing Mensah and Miami, Duke will play Clemson on Friday night at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.
The Tigers lost nine players to the 2026 NFL Draft, and head coach Dabo Swinney doesn't appear to have reloaded the roster with elite talent heading into this fall.
Duke needs to show it can beat a big-name ACC program this season, and Clemson appears to be the best shot Diaz has to show his team still has fire after losing Mensah.
This should be a winnable game for Duke, and would be huge heading into recruiting season.
