Manny Diaz leans on homegrown defensive talent to navigate a razor-thin margin for error as the Blue Devils aim to replicate last year’s improbable conference championship run.
On Nov. 18, Duke's season appeared all but dead following a 34-17 loss to Virginia that dropped the Blue Devils to 5-5.
Duke needed to win its final two games in the regular season to make a bowl game. However, the Blue Devils beat North Carolina by a touchdown the next week before beating Wake Forest to end its schedule.
Thanks to some weird conference tiebreaker rules, Duke found itself in the ACC Championship Game at 7-5 and pulled off an upset over Virginia in overtime.
The Blue Devils' miraculous 9-5 season seemed to have momentum building for the 2026 season until Darian Mensah transferred to Miami. Head coach Manny Diaz has his work cut out for him to return to the ACC championship.
Bill Connelly of ESPN argued that Duke has an outside chance to return to the game by winning nine games, though things could go south early for the program. How the defense plays this season will determine how far Duke goes.
"Diaz didn't load up on transfers in the front seven, choosing instead to trust his succession plans," Connelly wrote. "Six sophomores and juniors saw at least 100 snaps last season, and players such as junior tackle Preston Watson and blue-chip sophomore end Bryce Davis could be ready to shine.
"With excellent linebacker Luke Mergott returning as well, the defense might be able to improve enough to counter offensive regression. And with six ACC games projected within one score, per SP+, it wouldn't take much overachievement for the Blue Devils to threaten for another nine-win season or conference title berth. (Of course, it wouldn't take much underachievement for things to go pretty far south.)"
Given that the Blue Devils don't have the kind of resources it takes to compete with Miami and Clemson, it makes sense for Diaz to stick with the players he recruited and develop them into winners.
The main thing Duke can't take shortcuts, which could be frustrating this season if things don't work out as planned. On the flip side, the Blue Devils should have a good and talented defense in the future, capable of competing for a CFP spot.
