A former Duke Blue Devils basketball rival is staying in the Atlantic Coast Conference in a shocking move.
The Duke Blue Devils are very familiar with guard Seth Trimble who played four years at North Carolina. Trimble delivered one of Duke's three losses this past season, hitting a buzzer beater in the meeting in Chapel Hill.
But now Duke is going to see him once more, although it won't be with the Tar Heels.
On Wednesday morning, Trimble announced that he has committed to Louisville and will join Pat Kelsey's team this season. It comes after he went undrafted in the 2026 NBA Draft and signed an exhibit 10 contract with the Washington Wizards and spent Summer League with them.
With the new college ruling that grants a fifth year of eligibility, Trimble is going to test the waters and head to Louisville. Plenty of programs reached out to Trimble but it was Kelsey and the Cardinals who were the most persistent.
Trimble entered the transfer portal in the Spring after UNC's season ended, in hopes of landing a fifth year. With the Colorado district court ruling on the Class of 2022, it opened the door for his eligibility.
However, it's not a lock he suits up with Louisville as Pete Thamel wrote on Wednesday:
That eligibility is not certain. The NCAA has pushed back hard against the ruling and made clear it's not going to issue a blanket waiver, meaning that Trimble and the rest of the class of 2022 players granted eligibility will need the U.S Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit to uphold the injunction.
How it impacts Duke will be interesting.
The Blue Devils are considered the preseason favorites in the ACC this season but Louisville is a team that could contend with Duke. They have added a few high-profile players to the roster already and if Trimble is eligible, he figures to slot in as a starter right away.
Duke is set to face off against Louisville just once this season with the game being in Louisville.
Trimble averaged 14.0 points and 3.0 assists per game for North Carolina last season. In his career, he scored 971 career points, appearing in 126 games for the Tar Heels.
