The star quarterback and his mother reveal why a $4 million annual salary wasn’t enough to stay, prioritizing Miami’s championship pedigree over Duke’s stability and system.

Duke Torched by Darian Mensah, His Mother During ACC Media DaysMore Videos

Darian Mensah's decision to leave Duke for Miami all came down to a lack of faith in the football program and head coach Manny Diaz.

Mensah, who transferred from Jon Sumrall and Tulane before the 2025 season, threw for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns, and six interceptions last season, leading the Blue Devils to an ACC championship win.

Mensah decided to leave Duke to play for the Hurricanes after throwing for 327 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in the Blue Devils' 42-39 win over Arizona State in the Sun Bowl.

The decision seemed simple to outsiders. Miami has the budget to find a national championship roster. Carson Beck and Cam Ward upped their stock for the NFL by playing for the Hurricanes.

During Wednesday's ACC Kickoff media event, Darian's mother, Naomi Mensah, told Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports that the decision had nothing to do with money, as the Blue Devils had him on a two-year deal worth nearly $8 million.

Darian believed he could get more out of Miami for his career than he could at Duke.

"People were dragging Darian for thinking it was all about money. It wasn't. There was money either way," Naomi said. "We looked at the big picture of where Darian wants to go. That ultimately was the choice.

"What was going to get him to his end goal? He could go and win the ACC again, but could he get to a natty and win the Heisman?"

That's still a slap in the face to Duke and Diaz who could have made a run to the CFP with Darian and receiver Cooper Barkate on the roster.

Naomi said it was hard to see comments about her son being labeled a traitor by transferring to Miami.

Of course, Duke fans were elated when he transferred from Tulane, who beat Duke during the regular season last year and made the CFP.

On Wednesday, Darian noted that Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson was a pull for him this offseason because of how he helped Ward and Beck.

“That was a huge factor, deciding to transfer, seeing what those guys did,” Mensah said, via On3. “My OC, coach Dawson, will form the offense around the quarterback, around the stuff he likes to do.

"That also made it something I wanted to be a part of. It was one of the two most important factors as far as transferring goes, just seeing what Dawson’s done with those two quarterbacks, it’s special.”

Darian and Naomi didn't bash Duke outright, but it's clear they didn't think Duke was anywhere close to being on the level of Miami.
