Coach Manny Diaz has been on fire on the recruiting trail, and this time, he added to his secondary.
Duke head coach Manny Diaz is staying hot on the recruiting trail.
Shortly after landing a commitment from tight end Luke Karby, he then secured a commitment from safety DJ Waluyn of the 2027 class.
He’s a three-star recruit boasting an impressive resume from Hoover High School in Alabama.
Outside of the Blue Devils, Waluyn held offers from Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Kentucky, but ultimately decided to commit to Duke.
In his junior season, he finished the year with 64 total tackles and five tackles for loss and not only that, is a multi-sport athlete, dominating in track. He ran a 7.11 indoor 60-meter dash last year.
Waluyn may not have initially been a highly-touted prospect, but when you watch him on tape, he certainly has intangibles that seem like an easy transition to the college game.
He possesses elite instincts and can read a play before it even happens, with an ability to bridge the gap at a rapid speed. He’s also an incredibly sticky defender, especially in man coverage.
Something else that will help massively is his tackling ability. Very rarely will you see someone break one of Waluyn’s tackles. At the college level, it may be a bit more different, but as Waluyn continues to develop, his body will fill out.
And given how Duke’s current depth chart looks, Waluyn may get an extended look even as a freshman.
Last season, the secondary was horrendous, as the Blue Devils allowed an FBS-worst 289.1 passing yards per game.
Currently, 2026 safeties Tyson Sanford and KD Cotton are currently enrolled and will have experienced a full season under Diaz. And depending on how the 2026 season goes in the secondary, it may open the door for the underclassmen.
Looking ahead, there may be opportunities for Waluyn to compete for playing time. Among the safeties currently on Duke's roster, Leon Griffin III and Andrew Pellicciotta are two players who could still be in the picture when Waluyn arrives on campus.
One thing’s for sure though, Duke has been thriving on the recruiting trail at the moment, and Waluyn has the chance to be a diamond in the rough.
