Florida Among Top 25 Teams with Best Odds to Make CFP
Oct 27, 2026 12:00 PM

Riding the momentum of signature upsets, the Gators face a high-stakes collision with Georgia that could propel their playoff aspirations.

Heading into a massive Week 9 showdown in Atlanta, the No. 17 Florida Gators have a chance to shock the world for a second straight game.

With the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs looming, head coach Jon Sumrall couldn't have asked for a better time for his team to get a bye week.

Thankfully for the Bulldogs, they had one as well. It was far more needed for Georgia as they're coming off a brutal home loss to Auburn.

Yes, the same Tigers team that Florida beat on the road for a signature win in Week 3.

That win got people talking about Florida as a legitimate threat in the SEC, and then a 52-28 blowout over then-ranked No. 4 Ole Miss got the Gators some national attention.

Heading into Week 9, Georgia is given an 80% chance to make the playoffs. Those are the fifth-best odds in the nation, and even if they drop a second game, there's still a good chance they could sneak in.

For Florida, that's not the case. They already dropped a pair, so a third loss would be detrimental in the 12-team playoff era.

Knowing all of that, ESPN still gives the Gators a 17% chance to make the playoffs, but there's no doubt that it all rides on how things go down this weekend.

Florida given 22nd best odds to make CFP

As it stands, Florida is in the same conversation as UTSA, SMU, and Wisconsin. Those aren't necessarily the three teams they want to be talked about with, but those are the only four programs that crack the top 25 but still have less than a 20% chance of making the playoffs.

Teams at exactly 20% include: Arizona, New Mexico, Houston, and Northwestern.

To no surprise, there are plenty of SEC teams in the mix. Other than Florida and Georgia, these teams cracked the top 25: Alabama (63%), Texas (57%), Kentucky (52%), LSU (45%), Ole Miss (39%), and Tennessee (23%).

Obviously, there's still a lot of football to be played this season. The Florida vs. Georgia could eliminate one of those teams, but if the Gators prevail, that'll put the committee on notice.

Remember, Florida still has No. 9 Kentucky on the schedule, so things will get extremely interesting come Saturday, Nov. 14 at Kroger Field in Lexington, KY.

Sumrall and Co. just need to focus on taking things one week at a time, because that loss to South Carolina changed everything.
