As quarterback Aaron Philo battles a shoulder injury, the Gators receive a timely boost with star playmaker Vernell Brown III nearing a return for the Texas showdown.

Florida Has Update on Injured WR Amid Aaron Philo Shoulder WorryMore Videos

The Florida Gators are a little beaten up, if not shaken, headed into Week 7.

The Gators have been on a rollercoaster in the last two months. UF entered the season unranked but surged to No. 8 after beating Ole Miss on Sept. 26. Florida has been blown out by Mizzou and South Carolina in its last two games, causing the program to be dumped from the rankings.

Injuries have mounted amid that losing stretch. Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, Philo is questionable to play against Texas on Saturday due to a shoulder injury. He's been limited at practice this week.

Thamel also provided an update on wide receiver Vernell Brown III, who has been battling a knee injury. Brown practiced on Wednesday and had the best workout since suffering the knee injury.

The Gators would love to have Brown back in the lineup, as the team is 4-0 with him on the field. Certainly, with questions about the quarterback position before the game in Austin, Florida would like to have Brown on the field to stretch the Longhorns’ defense.

Through his first four games, Brown has 17 receptions for 271 yards and two touchdowns.

The Gators have not seen a ton of snaps with Brown, Eric Singleton Jr., and Dallas Wilson on the field together. Ideally, having all three of them on the field would create mismatches for offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner to exploit. It could also open up the running game for Jadan Baugh, who has 72 yards on 27 carries in his last two starts.

Wilson is the leading receiver on the Gators through the first six games with 26 receptions for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Brown is the second-leading receiver on the Gators despite missing two games.

Singleton has been somewhat quiet after missing the early part of the season with an ankle injury. He has three receptions for 50 yards.

The Gators need to find what works against Texas.

Florida had expectations the last two weeks and was unable to back the hype that came with upsetting Ole Miss. The Gators will enter Saturday's contest against the Longhorns as the underdog.

The pressure is off Florida, and that could be where this team is most dangerous under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. The Gators had a wake-up call by being blown out by a South Carolina program on the ropes.

If Sumrall can get his players fired up after the loss to USC, the Gators could make it a game in Austin this weekend.
