Florida Gators newly-hired head coach Jon Sumrall has high expectations for his team heading into the 2026 college football season.
As the Florida Gators and newly-hired head coach Jon Sumrall continue to prepare for the upcoming college football season, fans will be excited to hear what their newest coaching addition’s mindset is for 2026 and beyond.
During an interview with Action Sports Jax, Sumrall made it clear as to what his expectations are for the program during the 2026 college football season: Win.
“I’ve got expectations to win every game we play,” Sumrall stated. “That’s my expectation. I’m not comfortable with anyone going ‘hey, how many games are you comfortable winning this year,’ or ‘hey, bowl eligible this year,’ like, yeah, we better be, or I’m going to be up on the roof of the stadium getting ready to do something stupid.”

[Alan Youngblood/Gainesville Sun]After a brutal 3-4 start to the 2025 college football season, the Gators would ultimately part ways with former head coach Billy Napier, ending his four-year tenure with the program.
Throughout his time with Florida, Napier finished his coaching run with a 22-25 overall record, while also having one season that resulted in a record over the .500 mark in 2024. The Gators, despite their lackluster performances on a yearly basis under the former head coach, did manage to reach two bowl games during his time with the program in 2022 and 2024. Now, with Sumrall entering the picture for Florida heading into the 2026 college football season, the once-powerhouse SEC school will look to return to its winning ways.
Luckily for the struggling fanbase, the former Tulane Green Waves head coach possesses a rich history of completely overhauling football programs.
In his first season at Tulane back in 2024, the up-and-coming head coach led his team to a 9-5 record, but would lose to Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl, 33-8. Still, this did not affect Sumrall’s future with the Green Wave, as he helped his team win the AAC while maintaining an 11-3 record.
Thanks to the coaching staff’s incredible efforts throughout the transfer portal period this offseason, Florida was able to quickly retool the roster with multiple playmakers on both sides of the ball for Sumrall’s first season with the program. This, combined with a few key returners, should help the Gators reach new heights in 2026.
