Facing a $15 million NIL deficit, Florida head coach Jon Sumrall must leverage a powerhouse coaching staff and star talent to satisfy Scott Stricklin’s high expectations during his Gainesville debut.
New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall is trying to do the best with the limited resources he has in his first season in charge of the program.
Sumrall noted earlier this spring that the Gators are $15 million away in NIL spending to compete with other big boys in the SEC. Still, the expectations will be high for Sumrall in his first season in Gainesville.
Sumrall has notable talent that he inherited from last year's roster, including star running back Jadan Baugh, who earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2025.
For Sumrall to earn more resources during the next offseason, he needs to show he can win games with what he has currently on the roster.
And on the sidelines.
Last week, Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin told reporters that the expectations for the team should be high in Year 1 after Sumrall put together a talented staff of offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and defensive coordinator Brad White.
“From the first time we talked to Jon, he said, ‘I want to get Buster Faulkner as offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech and Brad White as our defensive coordinator.’ He basically put together the staff that he said was going to put together," Stricklin said, via On3.
"To me, those coaches who can do that are an early indication that, No. 1, they are in touch with what the reality of their ability to attract talent is. And then, No. 2, they’ve identified really good coaches. Those are really high-level coaches.”
Stricklin put a little bit of pressure on his first-year head coach, noting that Sumrall needed to "go win football games" in the upcoming season to prove he was the right hire for Florida.
“So all that’s to say I like the staff he’s put together,” Stricklin said. “The accountability in the program that he’s put in place. Proof is in the pudding, right? You’ve got to go win football games.
"But I just think the guy… his track record, he’s done it two different places. And the early returns in what he’s done inside the program I think has got Gator Nation really fired up.”
Stricklin has a right to be concerned. Summall turned around Troy and led Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season, but former head coach Billy Napier did well with Louisiana at the Group of 6 level before fizzling out at UF.
He finished 12-1 during his final season with the Rajin' Cajuns, and won the Sun Belt Conference in his final two seasons.
