The Florida Gators and head coach Jon Sumrall have continued their recent success on the 2027 recruiting trail on Friday afternoon.
The Florida Gators and newly-hired head coach Jon Sumrall have been on one of the most dominant recruiting stretches upon his arrival to the program.
As the No. 6-overall class in the 2027 cycle (per 247Sports), Florida’s future under Sumrall has never looked brighter heading into the 2026 college football season. However, there have been no signs of the Gators’ coaching staff slowing down their efforts on the recruiting trail, as the program added another name to the group before the end of the month.
According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett on Friday afternoon, 2027 four-star linebacker Ja’Bios Smith has committed to the Gators over the likes of the multiple SEC powerhouses, including the Georgia Bulldogs, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Jones’ Recruitment Journey
Jones, following a successful junior season in 2025, has quickly become one of the hottest prospects in the upcoming recruiting class. As of this month, Jones is a top-12 linebacker recruit in the 2027 class, as well as a top-20 prospect in the state of Georgia, per 247Sports’ Composite.
Over the last two seasons at Swainsboro High School, Jones has been a key piece to his team’s defense, racking up a total of 88 tackles, five tackles for losses, and three forced fumbles in 2024. His dominant efforts as a sophomore would continue into his most recent campaign with the Tigers, recording 72 tackles and eight tackles for losses in 2025.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 195 lbs., Jones already possesses a terrific frame that will allow him to excel at the college level in the near future. In addition to his stout stature, the Georgia native has elite athleticism that will provide a strong baseline to develop upon his arrival to Gainesville next year. While he may not have the size to adequately rush the passer, Jones is perfectly suited to play within the box and be an effective run stopper.
Now, with Jones announcing his commitment to the Gators this offseason, the program’s 2027 recruiting class now features a total of 17 commits, with five-star offensive tackle Maxwell Hiller being the top-ranked prospect part of the bunch. Sumrall has done an excellent job of addressing the defensive side of the ball in the upcoming class, but Jones is the first linebacker commit for the former Tulane Green Waves head coach.
