New Florida coach Jon Sumrall admits he's "uncomfortable" with the team's depth, urging players to elevate their physicality and edge for SEC competition.
Florida head coach Jon Sumrall has tried to instill a spirit of competition during spring practice this spring.
The Gators have 15 practices to learn Sumrall's system before training camp this summer. The new head coach is trying to turnaround a program that went 4-8 in 2025.
Sumrall has history on his side. He took the Tulane Green Wave to the College Football Playoff last season. With better resources, he's hoping to make Florida a contender in the SEC and CFP.
Earlier this week, Sumrall sounded the alarm on what he thinks of his roster so far. He told the media that he's "uncomfortable" with the team's depth on the roster.
"We need to develop our competitive depth in this roster," Sumrall said. "I don't feel really good. In full disclosure, I am very uncomfortable with the depth of how competitive we are. In this league, you better be.
"We're not there yet - at all. It's a little uneasy for me. So we need to challenge some guys to go play football."
Sumrall noted similar concerns at the start of practice this spring. He was worried about how physical the team was playing during practices.
"I'd like for it to be more physical," Sumrall said. "The guys are trying. They're trying to play hard. They are. This is a league that you have to be calloused and tough to win - and that's at every level, not just at the line of scrimmage.
"Now, the line of scrimmage is clearly a grown man's league. But our guys have to understand that, man, there are no days off. So just continue to elevate how we play with an edge."
Clearly, the Gators have much to show its first-year head coach.
Florida's roster should have enough talent to compete in the SEC. But the team has to buy into the new program.
It appears Sumrall and his staff still have a lot of work to do to get the players on board with the program.
The tough SEC schedule is coming in months, whether Sumrall's squad is prepared or not.
