The Florida Gators and head coach Jon Sumrall received some exciting news regarding one of the program's top targets in the 2027 recruiting class on Sunday.
As the Florida Gators and newly-hired head coach Jon Sumrall continue their dominant efforts on the 2027 recruiting trail, the struggling program is set for a massive month within the class this summer.
Since his arrival to the program back in December of 2025, Sumrall has been nothing short of impressive when it comes to acquiring talented prospects at the high school level, as Florida currently possesses 22 commits in the upcoming class. To make matters more interesting, the Gators received exciting news regarding one of the top targets in the 2027 class last week.
According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett on Sunday evening, 2027 five-star wide receiver Eric McFarland III has cut his list of schools down to four, with the Gators being part of the mix.
Could Florida Land McFarland?
McFarland, as one of the highest-rated wide receivers in the 2027 recruiting class, has been on Sumrall’s radar since his arrival to the program. The talented playmaker is currently the No. 4-ranked prospect in the state of Florida, as well as the No. 5 wide receiver recruit in the 2027 class, per 247Sports’ Composite.
Throughout his past two seasons at IMG Academy, McFarland has proven to be an electric weapon with the ball in his hands, recording 1,169 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns. The speedy pass catcher was also included in the 2026 Under Armour All-America Game roster, giving him the opportunity to compete against some of the top-ranked prospects in high school across the nation.
However, in order for Sumrall and the Gators to secure yet another difference-maker in the 2027 recruiting class, the program must ramp up its efforts for McFarland this offseason. Last month, McFarland took official visits to Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, but did not visit Gainesville in the process. In addition to not taking an official visit to Florida this summer, 247Sports’ Zach Blostein gave a crystal ball prediction for the Texas A&M Aggies to land the in-state prospect.
McFarland is set to announce his commitment on Jun 28, making it an important day for the Gators. Still, despite the odds not being in favor of Florida, Sumrall has already landed three four-star wide receiver commits in the 2027 class, including Elias Pearl and Tramond Collins.
