Coach Jon Sumrall secures a major defensive victory as Orlando standout Kamauri Whitfield rejects Oregon and Nebraska to join a rising top-10 Florida Gators recruiting class for 2027.
Florida Gators first-year head coach Jon Sumrall had a hot start to recruiting this spring, putting the program in the top 10 on most commit lists around the country.
Sumrall had a challenging start when he first stated recruiting for the Gators as he was serving double duty while coaching Tulane in the College Football Playoff.
Still, the Gators are expected to have enough talent on the current roster to be ranked this fall, which should help Sumrall add better players for the 2027 season.
On Monday, UF added an in-state commit for Sumrall's defense.
Per Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, cornerback Kamauri Whitfield committed to Florida. He chose the Gators over Big Ten programs Nebraska and Oregon.
"BREAKING: Class of 2027 CB Kamauri Whitfield has Committed to Florida, he tells me for Rivals," Fawcett posted on X. "The 5’11 190 CB chose the Gators over Oregon and Nebraska.
'I’M HOME! The best stay in state. Gator nation let’s work Go Gators,'" Whitfield said.
Per 247 Sports, Whitfield is a three-star cornerback out of Orlando, Florida. He's ranked at the 48th best cornerback in the 2027 class. UF is now ranked No. 10 for the 2027 class.
College football fans reacted on social media to Whitfield choosing the Gators.
"Somebody might wanna tell that kid the best players from Florida end up at THEE Ohio State University," wrote a fan.
"Welcome to the swamp, Kamauri, now you can finally say you’re good at both catching passes and catching flies," posted another.
"Great decision over Nebraska buddy," argued a fan.
"Welcome home! Gator Nation got you from here!" wrote a fan.
"Good to see elite FL players stay in state!" posted another.
"Get in the locker Lanning," joked a fan.
Landing Whitfield over Oregon is a huge win for Sumrall, and it shows just how good the young cornerback has the potential to be at Florida.
Sumrall is well known for recruiting some of the best talent for his secondary, as that unit is expected to be one of the better units in the country this season.
