Jon Sumrall is prioritizing the trenches to restore Florida’s dominance, but the Gators must outpace SEC rivals on the trail to secure a championship-caliber foundation for 2027.
Head coach Jon Sumrall had a serious distraction when he first accepted the job at Florida.
He was getting Tulane prepared for the College Football Playoff against Ole Miss. Sumrall still managed to add a solid class. Per 247 Sports, UF was ranked 18th in recruiting overall for 2026.
Florida should have plenty of talent on its roster this season to compete for a bowl game, though Sumrall noted this spring he wished he could have added some players after spring football so he could create competition for spots in training camp.
There will be no more reinforcements for Sumrall before the regular season, but Florida has been aggressive in adding recruits for the 2027 class.
Per Austin Nivison of CBS Sports, the Gators are currently ranked No. 10 in recruiting this summer.
"Jon Sumrall has wasted no time laying the groundwork for his tenure with the Gators," Nivison wrote. "Florida has done very well on the recruiting trail, and it has stacked some big wins outside of the state.
"That includes top commitment Maxwell Hiller, a 6-foot-5 and 300-pound offensive tackle who is a 'pancake machine,' according to 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks. If Sumrall and the Gators keep this up, they should finish well ahead of the No. 18 class they signed in 2026."
In addition to Hiller, the Gators added two four-star offensive linemen (Peyton Miller, Elijah Hutcheson) and four-star defensive lineman (Cahron Wheeler).
Sumrall is clearly building his roster through the trenches, something Florida will need if it wants to contend for an SEC championship.
While a top 10 ranking isn't bad for Florida, Sumrall could improve his class for 2027. CBS has Florida ranked behind fellow SEC programs Auburn, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M.
Being behind Auburn isn't ideal for Sumrall, as he appeared to be the Tigers' first choice as head coach before he took the Florida gig. New Auburn head coach Alex Golesh has already landed 25 commits for 2027.
Sumrall should be able to land more commits and transfers if Florida plays well this season. Some big wins should get boosters to open their checkbooks.
