Despite quarterback uncertainty and offensive line questions, a stout defense and favorable schedule could propel Florida Gators HC Jon Sumrall’s squad from last year’s cellar into the postseason conversation.
Coming off a 4-8 season, new Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall should be happy with laying the foundation of his program in 2026, but outside noise will certainly put some pressure on the staff in Gainesville this fall.
The defense should be legit. With that being said, many of those core defenders are holdovers from the Billy Napier regime, and it is yet to be seen if they can match the intensity of Sumrall.
Sumrall noted during spring football that he wished the transfer portal was open before training camp so he could bring in competition after watching the practice habits of his players at Florida.
While an 7-5 or 8-4 season should be viewed as a success this year, some in the national media think the Gators can compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Chris Lowe of On3 named Florida as an SEC "darkhorse" to make the playoff. He argued the Gators schedule isn't as "difficult" as other programs in the conference.
While Kentucky has an impossible schedule, the Gators slate of conference games won't be easy. In SEC play, they'll start off on the road against Auburn before hosting Ole Miss.
They'll also have to play Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma in back-to-back-to-back games. How they do in late October and early November will prove how close the Gators are to contending in the conference.
Again, outside expectations feel a little too high at this point in the offseason for Sumrall and UF. Remember, the Gators are replacing three starting offensive linemen, and new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner has yet to find the starting combination after 15 practices in the spring.
More importantly, Florida will enter training camp in July with a quarterback battle between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr.
It would be a lot to ask Philo or Jones to be ready to lead the Gators to a nine- or 10-win season behind a questionable offensive line. While UF has weapons like running back Jadan Baugh and receivers Dallas Wilson, Vernell Brown III, and Eric Singleton Jr., there's only so much growth one can expect from the offense in Year 1.
