Despite a championship pedigree and bold ambitions for Gainesville, Florida head coach Jon Sumrall lands mid-pack in Athlon Sports’ SEC rankings as he prepares to transition his winning formula to Florida.
New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has not been quiet about his ambitions to win right away in Gainesville.
He's made some rather bold comments, suggesting some players on his roster needed another kick in the pants after spring football in order to get them to compete the way he'd like for the upcoming season.
Sumrall wants to win a bowl game at a minimum this season, as he tries to recruit players that will help UF compete for a title in 2027.
While Sumrall is talking a big game, he has yet to back it up on the field with Florida.
Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports came up with his rankings for SEC coaches this offseason. He's ranking Sumrall at No. 10 out of 16, believing the new coach is the "perfect" leader to take over a gig in the conference.
"Sumrall grew up in the SEC footprint, played his college ball at Kentucky, and later coached as an assistant in Lexington and at Ole Miss," Lassan wrote. "Essentially, he’s the perfect coach to take over at a SEC job. The 43-year-old coach arrives in Gainesville after successful stints at Troy (23-4 from 2022-23) and Tulane (20-8 from 2024-25).
"Sumrall guided the Trojans to back-to-back Sun Belt titles and led the Green Wave to an American Conference title and College Football Playoff last year. Sumrall has only worked as a FBS head coach for four seasons, but he’s 43-12 overall and has thrived at getting the most out of a roster and developing talent."
Sumrall will be able to live off making an appearance in the CFP for a while, and it should help the Gators land recruits for the next few seasons.
Still, UF hired Bill Napier before Sumrall, and he received similar praise for his ability to make Louisiana into a contender. In his final season with the Rajin' Cajuns, the team finished 12-1. Had the 12-team CFP been around them, Napier might have had a team in the tournament.
His style of football didn't translate to Florida. Florida hopes the situation with Sumrall is different, but we'll need to see some games on the field before rendering a verdict.
