By prioritizing elite offensive linemen and a promising five-star quarterback, Jon Sumrall is rapidly rebuilding the Florida Gators’ trenches to secure a powerhouse foundation for future playoff runs.
Florida head coach Jon Sumrall intends to make the best of what he has on the roster he inherited this offseason.
Sumrall has a core group of players that were from the regime of former head coach Billy Napier. The new Florida leader faced complications in preparing the Gators to land elite talent for the 2026 season as he needed to complete his duties as head coach of Tulane in the College Football Playoff.
The Gators have talented skilled positions at receiver in and the backfield, but Sumrall has noted his concern with the state of the offensive line during the spring. Florida had an underwhelming quarterback battle this spring between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. through 15 practices.
Sumrall has worked hard to address the quarterback position and offensive line unit for the 2027 class.
Craig Haubert of ESPN has ranked Florida as having the No. 4 current recruiting class for 2027.
He noted six-foot-six quarterback Davin Davison is a key addition who needs to be developed, but shows promise. Sumrall also landed running back Andrew Beard, who could be a huge help after Jadan Baugh enters the 2027 NFL Draft.
Haubert is impressed with how Sumrall recruited for the offensive line, and Maxwell Hiller could be an immediate contributor for Florida in 2027.
"April brought with it a statement from new Florida coach Jon Sumrall that success will start up front," Haubert wrote.
"His first big win leading the Gators was landing five-star Maxwell Hiller, an OL who possesses a wealth of tools blending toughness and flexibility with sound technique and he could not only be an elite presence for them in the trenches but is a contender to able to quickly work his way into the mix upon arrival."
In addition to Hiller, UF landed Peyton Miller, the No. 1 ranked center in the class, though he might need more time to develop. Elijah Hutcheson is another key piece of depth for the offensive line in 2027.
Sumrall values physicality and toughness, so it's no surprise he's investing his resources into the trenches. That should pay off when the Gators make a run at the CFP, where teams built in the trenches tend to make it to the title game.
